False Alarm...

9/26/2012

We all have those days we want to forget and never look back on! For me that day was yesterday...

Okay so picture this, 9:30 am I jump in the shower, Justin's at work and I'm home alone. When I go to get out of the shower {with nothing but a towel on} I see a beat up, red van parked in our side driveway with a man sitting in the drivers seat.

{Heart skips a beat...}

I'm being honest here when I say I tried my hardest to stay calm. I immediately stepped back into the shower and started rationalizing all of the possibilities to why he was parked at our house and I couldn't think of one. I grabbed my phone and texted Justin telling him what was going on and I asked him if he was expecting anyone at the house. Well I knew I wouldn't get a response back from him for awhile since he was working so I called my dad... NO ANSWER.

Are you ready for the next part?

I heard a voice coming from the front of our house and it sounded like it was coming from our porch.  Then I hear a second voice and a pounding noise on the front door. {Might I ad that I'm still in my towel trying to remain calm at this point!} However the calmness went out the window when I heard voices all around our house. I of course began to think that they were trying to break in and were staking out the house to make sure no one was home. My dog was going insane and they just wouldn't leave. At that point I went into a full fledged, panic and it was GAME OVER.

I called 911 and let them know that I was home alone and two men were trying to break into our house and they were prepared to escape because they had a getaway driver. I also informed them that they needed to get to our house ASAP because I might die. {Yes, the drama came along with the fear. Totally natural and expected in my book.}

Long story short- the van left, the police came, I survived, the husband called....

wait for it....

The husband called to inform me that I had just called the police on the appraisers who were there to re-appraise our house!

ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!

Please tell me I'm not alone in this and that this has SO happened to you before. Lies are accepted and welcomed! :)

  1. Oh my gosh I would have gone into full-fledged panic attack mode as well. But what the hay--why were they surrounding your house and banging on the doors. NOT COOL! I'm sorry you had to go through that..and in a towel!

    1. I'm guessing either they needed to check the inside of the house, or they wanted to check in with the homeowner before they started the appraisal. Either way, I sure as heck wouldn't have opened the door for them if I had no idea who they were!

  2. LOL! That is hilarious! I saw a truck infront of our house and some guy turn our sprinklers on so I calmly walk outside look at him and turn our sprinklers back off and walk inside. I call my husband "Someone is here messing with our sprinklers so I shut them off. He was like "seriously?! That's Matt he is here working on our front yard"...oh whoops. Husbands never give the proper heads up lol!

  3. Haha, Oh my gosh, I totally would have done the same thing! Better to be safe than sorry! And being in only a towel makes in 10x worse!

  4. LOL oh my gosh, Lauren! I laughed so hard when I read that it was the appraisers that you called the cops on! That is just TOO funny!
    I totally would have done the same thing...I would be plotting in my mind how I would try to fight them off if they got in! Whew! At least it was nothing!

  8. Something similar happened to me once! I was probably 17 at the time and I was home alone. I was sitting in my room and heard someone at the door, but wasn't going to answer it. I kept listening as they were there for a minute, and all the sudden i heard someone fidgeting with the door handle and I started getting a little nervous. I stood in my door way and watched as they opened the front door. I was freaked out, the guy saw me and acted as though nothing was wrong. He explained he was a realtor and he was showing the house (our house was for sale) I called my mom and confirmed, and was quite upset that no one told me they were coming! I'm surprised I didn't call 911. You'll laugh about it later!

  9. Oh I would have felt the same way! And been LIVID at my husband for not telling me about it, or answering his phone which are both things he'd totally do!!!! I NEVER answer the door when I'm home alone. I don't even answer if my husband is home; I make him do it. If I'm not expecting you, I'm not opening the door. I am grateful that we have SO many windows I can sneak a peek out of, but unfortunately you can only see the street and driveway, not the front door. So did the police come, and you had to explain it to them? That's gotta be the worst part!

  10. When I am home alone, I refuse to answer the door. Absolutely refuse. I also turn off the lights and hide if I hear the doorbell or someone knock. My husband says I am a freak. But really... why would I want to open the door to a stranger? A stranger who could kill me or steal me? Men just don't understand.

  11. OMG!!! That is so scary/hysterical!! I can't believe this all happen IN A TOWEL! Although my favorite part was that you told the cops they had a getaway car hahaha! I watch so much criminal minds so I would absolutely have done the same thing! It's always better safe than sorry!

  12. That is scary! I didn't get to calling 911 because finally my husband answered, but one time I was naked home alone and had some sketch looking guys come to the house we were renting. Turns out (its all our husband's fault for not telling us) that they were termite killers.

    I was confused because no we didn't have termites (the house was already inspected) and no my husband never breathed a word of this before my frantic phone call to him. I guess the landlord wanted to get the house treated despite there being no termites (what a weirdo.)

  14. hahahah this is too funny! I mean it's funny now that I know the ending, but I would have been freaking out also. Although my dog is pretty large and has a very deep scary bark that would probably scare anyone that doesn't know her off.

    Glad everyone is ok! Better safe than sorry!!!

  20. I laughed out loud, only because I would have done the exact same thing. I have NO shame in calling the cops when something seems out of sorts!

  21. OMG I would have reacted the EXACT same way you did!!! Were you in your towel the entire time, or did you manage to get some clothes on between calling 911 and having the police arrive?! Because that would be even more mortifying! Awww girl, seriously, I can definitely relate to this!

  22. Okay...so this would have scared the mess out of me too. I don't know what I would have done. That's scary. They can always come back another day. haha
